Sympathy & Bereavement Gifts for Coworkers: What's Appropriate (and What Isn't)
Share
Of all the gifts a company sends, this is the one nobody wants to need. And it's also the one people remember most, for better or worse, because it happens during one of the hardest moments in someone's life.
Getting it right doesn't take a big budget. It takes care.
Start With Privacy, Not a Company-Wide Email
A loss is personal, and how it's shared should be up to the person going through it, not a blanket announcement to the whole company. Check with the employee, or with HR, about what they're comfortable with others knowing before you send anything or say anything publicly.
What Tends to Land Well
Simple, sincere gestures go further than anything elaborate:
- A handwritten card from a manager or close colleagues, not a mass-signed office card
- Flowers or a plant, if you know the family welcomes them
- A donation to a cause the person or their family cares about, when that's appropriate
- Practical support, like a meal delivery or covering a few days of work without question
- Simply giving the person space and flexible time, which often matters more than any object
What to Avoid
A few things consistently miss the mark. Skip anything overly cheerful or bright. Skip generic "sympathy gift baskets" that feel mass-produced for the occasion. Avoid attaching any kind of deadline or follow-up request, like asking when they'll be back, in the same gesture. And never make assumptions about someone's faith, family structure, or beliefs when choosing what to send. A simple, warm message usually says more than a themed gift ever could.
When in Doubt, Ask Someone Close to Them
If you're not sure what's appropriate, a coworker who's close to the person can usually tell you more than a general guide can. What matters most isn't getting the object exactly right. It's making sure the person knows their team is there for them.
